Caught a favorite scene while watching Netflix? If you’re using the mobile app, things will be simple - the Moment feature allows you to add a time stamp for convenient replay. But, what if you would like to record a clip and save it? Can you do it on phones, or even on PCs and TVs?
Before go to the how-to part, let’s clear some questions.
Since Moment can only be used on the Netflix mobile app, some may not be familiar with it if watching Netflix on PCs or TVs. This feature acts like a bookmark and you can use it to mark the scene you love. When you want to review or share the scene, you can quickly locate the specific time.
So, to the question, can you record a Netflix clip by using the Moment feature? No. It’s not a capture feature and has nothing to do with recording.
Seeing many have posted these “Can” and “Does” questions about Netflix screen recording. Summarize in one sentence: Netflix does prevent users from recording its content, even a 3-second clip, for revenue and copyright protection.
When you try to screen record a scene, you will see a black screen with audio only. Explain from a technical perspective, the result is due to the Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology used by the platform. The video stream is encrypted.
Please note that Android and iOS add a layer to prevent screen recording from system-level. That’s is to say, if you want to screen record Netflix directly on your mobile, the process is restricted by the app and the system.
Saving favourite scene is a common need. You can do it for personal and non-commercial use. However, you should also consider legal issues before sharing it.
To avoid black screen issues, you'd better get clips via browsers. Here're the detailed steps.
Step 1. Turn off hardware acceleration on the browser.
Take Chrome as an example. Go to Settings > System > toggle off "Use hardware acceleration when available." > relaunch.
Disabling hardware acceleration forces the browser to use the CPU instead of the GPU for rendering graphics. This gives a chance to avoid black screen.
Step 2. Open Netflix on your browser.
Find the video and then play it.
Step 3. Use a screen recorder to get clips from Netflix.
You can use Kingshiper Screen Recorder, OBS, or other tools.
a. Install Kingshiper and choose Full Screen Mode or Window Recording mode.
b. Click the Record button to start recording.
Step 4. Click the folder icon to find the clip file.
To get clips, you can try to download the Netflix content first and then use a video editor to cut out a specific duration.
